Optimal environmental policy in the presence of ecological thresholds

چکیده
We study the environmental and economic effects of public abatement in the presence of multiple stable steady-state ecological equilibria. The isocline for the stock of pollution features two stable branches, a good and a bad one. Assuming that the ecology is initially located on the upper (bad) branch of the isocline, the ecological equilibrium is hysteretic and a suitably designed temporary abatement policy can be used to steer the environment from the bad to the good equilibrium. In all models considered in this paper, a “cold turkey” abatement policy is optimal, i.e. the largest feasible shock should be administered for the shortest possible amount of time. Depending on the particular model used to characterize the economic system, there is a capital feedback effect that either helps or hinders the attainment of a successful abatement policy.

A Multi-Stage Single-Machine Replacement Strategy Using Stochastic Dynamic Programming
In this paper, the single machine replacement problem is being modeled into the frameworks of stochastic dynamic programming and control threshold policy, where some properties of the optimal values of the control thresholds are derived. Using these properties and by minimizing a cost function, the optimal values of two control thresholds for the time between productions of two successive nonco...
متن کاملA new machine replacement policy based on number of defective items and Markov chains
A novel optimal single machine replacement policy using a single as well as a two-stage decision making process is proposed based on the quality of items produced. In a stage of this policy, if the number of defective items in a sample of produced items is more than an upper threshold, the machine is replaced. However, the machine is not replaced if the number of defective items is less than ...
متن کاملInvestigating Adaptive Behaviors in Urban Spaces in Relation to the Dialectical Concepts of Isolation and Congestion
The presence of people in urban spaces and related components is one of the most important issues in the field of behavioral sciences in urban studies. The mechanism of static presence in urban spaces is influenced by factors that generally determine the quality of social life in these spaces. The present study examines the way people are present in urban spaces in relation to each other, and i...
متن کاملInvestigating Soil Characteristics and Physiographic Factors Affecting the Establishment of Taverniera spartea (Burnm. f.) DC. in Hormozgan province
Introduction: Considering the extensive degradation of Iranian rangelands and forests due to livestock grazing and the land use change in recent decades, rangeland management requires a comprehensive knowledge concerning the ecological characteristics of native plant species and how they respond to environmental factors. Developed from the Fabaceae legume family, Taverniera spartea is an impo...
متن کاملApplication of Ecological Theory to Management of Arid Drylands: An Example from China
Rangeland ecosystems shift across dynamic thresholds between differentecological states in response to natural or human-induced factors. These differentecological states are the result of interactions among climate, soils, grazing history, and management practices. The notion of a single ‘‘pristine’’ final state is onlyconceptual in nature, and because of this, dynamic thresholds and the effects...
